Ubuntu 11.10 Alpha 2

Welcome to Oneiric Ocelot Alpha 2, which will in time become Ubuntu 11.10.
Pre-releases of Oneiric Ocelot are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.
Alpha 2 is the second in a series of milestone images that will be released throughout the Oneiric development cycle.
New packages showing up for the first time include:

  • Linux Kernel 3.0-rc5
  • gcc 4.6.1 compiler
  • Firefox 5.0
  • Thunderbird 5.0
  • A Mesa 7.11 snapshot.
You can download Alpha 2 images here:
Additional images are also available at:
Alpha 2 includes a number of software updates that are ready for wider testing. This is quite an early set of images, so you should expect some bugs. For a more detailed description of the changes in the Alpha 2 release and the known bugs (which can save you the effort of reporting a duplicate bug, or help you find proven workarounds)

This time, for Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal), the Ubuntu developers decided to change the release schedule again, to 5 Alpha versions, a single Beta release, and a Release Candidate:

-November 4th, 2010 - Alpha 1 release

-December 2nd, 2010 - Alpha 2 release
-January 6th, 2011 - Alpha 3 release
-February 3rd, 2011 - Alpha 4 release

-March 31st, 2011 - Beta release
-April 21st, 2011 - Release Candidate
-April 28th, 2011 - Final release of Ubuntu 11.04

As you can see, the work on Ubuntu 11.04 will start in one month after Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) will be released, on October 10th.

Until the first Alpha version of Ubuntu 11.04 will be made available for testing, on November 4th, we will have the second Ubuntu Developer Summit (UDS) event for 2010, on October 28th, which will take place in Orlando, Florida. So make sure you're there if you care about the future of Ubuntu!

Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) will be the 14th release of the Ubuntu operating system. It will bring support for multi-touch technology, improved artwork, better hardware support and ARM compatibility.

Until then, we have another version that should catch our attention and invade our computers, Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat), which will be released on October 10th, 2010.

Ubuntu is a Linux distribution for your desktop or server, with a fast and easy install, regular releases, a tight selection of excellent packages installed by default, every other package you can imagine available from the network, and professional technical support from Canonical Ltd and hundreds of other companies around the world.
